Take a Guess | John DeAngelo

While planting a kiss on your neck
in passing, I casually inquired
why you were fussing so
painting your toes and nails
your distinctive sunset red
painstakingly fixing your hair
and freshening up the little
make-up you wore or even needed
choosing your outfit so carefully
when we were just going to
a bar-b-q at a friend’s.

Without even thinking
you said quite matter of factly
that you never wanted to leave
even the slightest opening
for any of the other women
who might be there to think
even for the slightest second
that they might have any chance
of swooping in and gobbling me up.

Well, you can probably guess
what happened next and why
we were more than a little late
arriving at the bar-b-q.

John DeAngelo was born and raised in Greenwich Village, NYC. And if asked, he’d tell you that he’s always been an artist, both a poet and a visual artist. A veteran of Viet Nam, he pursued graduate study at Rutgers University with poet Nathaniel Tarn who took him under his tutelage.

He has been published in numerous magazines both print and online, including Red Wheelbarrow 14, Worksheets 67&68, Flora Fiction, Syndic, The World Poetry Anthology, Thorny Locust, Carmina, etc.
