Free Love | Sam Hendrian

Told her I cared
Under the assumption it was true
Then found myself blocking the exit door
Which made me wonder if I meant it.

Love is born from attachment
And purified through detachment
But if that’s really the case
Why must we suffer when those we love vanish?

I stepped away
To prove she could leave whenever she wanted
Before stepping back
To prove I didn’t want her to.

We’re expected to stay close,
We’re expected to offer distance
Yet we’re not expected to know
When one or the other is preferred.

So I try to position my feet
Semi-diagonally
In an effort to keep the door
Open to interpretation.
