far from home | Archie Everes

The one most understanding of my being,
coincidentally the furthest out of my reach.
Exchanging message after message
deep, intimate secrets, back and forth,
over half a decade of the closest relationship in my life.

The most distant relationship in my life, still
Separate only by consequence of the cruelties
forced against us by the Pacific Ocean.
A shade of cobalt strikingly similar
to eyes I will never meet with my own.

Is there an existing word, I wonder,
to describe such an all-knowing, all-agonising
sense of closeness to someone you’ve never even met?
We may never catch one another’s gaze
across a crowded room, an inside joke we’ve known for years
played simultaneously across ocean and border lines alike.

We may never hug, or hear our laughter unfiltered
by the static of video calls and voice channels.
Or see the movies we like, or relax together
after a sodden, heavy day of the plights that feel so entwined.

We may never be inseparable,
in any context of the word.

Archie Everes is an out-of-school caregiver with plans of pursuing future study in criminal psychology and creative media. She holds a strong affinity to moral-based literature, though her works are often inspired by mental health, as well as her sheltered upbringing in rural Australia.
