white and pink flowers under blue sky during daytime_edited_edited_edited_edited.jpg

Threaded | Sarah Jayne Kelly

walking home,
the air was crisp in the night,
only getting colder near the door.
my cardigan— spoiled by your scent.
that saccharine cologne; slick to my skin
and thick on my clothes. the stale taste
of your breath, now part of my
own exhales. I told myself to dive
into my floral sheets, for my cheeks
to blush in memory of you. and yet
in the embrace of the warm lamplight,
all I could do was sit and stare at the face
looking back at me. rosy, glistening.
I hadn’t seen her in years. the way she
clawed her nails through
your brunette curls and let you in.
your fingertips crawled all over me.
that’s what she wanted. what she lived for.
and in your presence, I let her take over.
somehow, despite the churn in my stomach,
we’ve threaded ourselves
to you.
          attached,
                     until she lets me go.
