Exposition | Shelby Fairbairn

Sing me a song that explains how I think
Enter my head without knocking and expose me for the child I am
Expose me for the monster
Expose me for the child
Expose me for the god I am

Tell me a story that unravels my heart
Break down the walls and reveal the secrets I keep
Secrets I cherish
Secrets I keep
Secrets that shape sand into glass

Sail into my eyes until you reach the soul
See what I mean and touch the inner core of me
Touch the nerves
Touch the core of me
Touch me into waking

Walk the line I try so hard to stay in step with
Lead me to a place where I can sleep in peace
Sleep in silence
Sleep in peace
Sleep like I never learned what fear is

I'll sing you a song to explain how you think
I'll enter your head without a knock and breathe calm in

I'll tell you a story that breaks your heart

I'll shape the shards into a shoddy basin the best I can

Your eyes are weak and watery, soul so naked in a sheen of salty film
An old soul, to be sure, I'll bring the child out in wonder and whimsy

Your line parallels mine, leading to a sweet dreamless sleep where we're both our own
Sleep in the road to avoid the inevitable fork in the road

Fork in the road
Don't wake up

Shelby Fairbairn is a poet who has been writing poetry since her childhood. Her poetry is a release from the turmoil in her life and stems from the desire to face her shadow. While her poetry has darker themes, she always allows hope to appear in her pieces. She has not lead a shelter life and her poetry reflects that, clearly expressing times where she may have faltered or given in to her shadow self. She writes in the hopes that someone may read these pieces and relate in some way, helping them to face their shadows and feel relief.
